MSNBC is an international news channel owned by NBCUniversal News Group which is owned by NBC Universal Television Group. The channel broadcasts daily news, business programming and shows like Rachel Maddow, AM Joy and others. The news television was launched on July 15, 1996 by Microsoft and General Electric in a partnership. Headquarters of the channel are located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York City, New York. Political programs were soon introduced to attract the viewers. However, Mike Barnicle’s Show was put down due to high costs. September 11 Attacks and Afghan war were the important events in the history of the channel. On Dec 23, 2005, the station officially announced that it would be acquiring 32% additional share in MS. NBC later bought the remaining 18% stake in the channel. On June 7, 2006 Rick Kaplan resigned as President of the channel after serving for almost two years on the post. Phil Griffin would manage the channel in absence of Kaplan. The primetime lineup of the service was changed on June 29, 2006. It started broadcasting from Rockefeller Center Complex in Oct 2007.
Nielsen ratings recorded in the mid of 2008 showed an increase of 61%. The coverage of Presidential campaign was done by Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and David Gregory. The rating secured by the channel in first three months of the presidential campaign showed an increase up to 158% which was double than that of 2004. It left behind CNN for the first time in ratings. The Rachel Maddow show was also having great success at that time as it soon began to beat Larry King Live in ratings. Other shows broadcasted by MSNBC at that time were The Ed Show, Morning Joe, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Hardball. The successful ratings were celebrated by the station in 2008.
Griffin in an interview said: “We’ve taken on CNN and we beat them,” MSNBC president Phil Griffin told employees at a series of celebratory “town hall” meetings. “Now it’s time to take on Fox.” NBCNews.com, the official site of the channel was rebranded in July 2012. Keith Olbermann on Jan 21, 2011 left MSNBC. In 2014 the ratings of the station were dropped by 20% and it finished at third place. Efforts were made to revive the station in 2015 and talk shows were introduced.
